The first week of bowl season went largely as predicted. Looking at the results, I doubt anyone would argue a better team got beat soundly. The TCU/Boise game met expectations, Pat White won his 15th straight bowl game (an NCAA record) and somehow Central Michigan lost a home game against a very average Florida Atlantic team. Don't look know, but Florida State just landed another punt inside the 1 yard line.
Thus far, the conference loser is the WAC (1-3), conference winner is the PAC 10. Big East also is 2-0, but Cal over Miami and Arizona over BYU are more impressive right now. Buckeye fans can rest easy knowing that Boise probably deserved the BCS turndown.
The most impressive win is TCU over Boise. The least impressive win was South Florida over Memphis. MVP goes to Pat White who proved once again he is a winner by driving his Mountaineer team down the field to beat the Tar Heels 31-30. A close second is FSU punter Graham Gano who killed Wisconsin with his precision punting. The Badgers average starting position on offense in the first half was their own 1 yard line. TCU's D is a distant third.
The most disappointing team was Central Michigan. Not that the Motor City Bowl is important, but losing what amounted to a home game is pathetic. On the flip side, Howard Schnellenberger improved his bowl record to 6-0.
The big game this week before New Years should be the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. Generally a favorite among bowl enthusiasts, this year's game puts Oklahoma State against Oregon. The Holiday Bowl is usually high scoring, but 2008 may set the record as both the Cowboys and the Ducks average over 475 yards of offense and 41 points per game. WOW.
