Conference Games of the
Week
ACC
Miami vs. Virginia
Tech. All the talk has centered on Miami’s return to college football relevancy.
After beating Florida State and Georgia Tech, the Canes find
themselves back in the AP Top 25. Can they stay there? Blacksburg is a tough
venue, and the Hokies will give them a better game than the Noles and Yellow
Jackets. Hokies win 27-24.
Alternative game: North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech. The Jackets
have played lousy since the opening half against Clemson. The Heels have been
unimpressive in their three wins. I like Ga Tech in high scoring game.
Big East
NC State vs. Pittsburgh. Pitt is 3-0, but the schedule has
not been overly difficult. NC State is 2-1, but the Wolfpack’s two wins were
against FCS opponents. Game is in Raleigh and Wannstedt is due for a loss. Ugly,
low scoring game. 14-10.
Alternative game: Louisville at Utah. The Cardinals badly need a win against
a quality opponent. It won’t happen this week. The Utes win at home
27-21.
Big Ten
Iowa vs. Penn State. The ABC featured game of the
week. Last year, the Hawkeyes spoiled the Nittany Lions’ chances for a shot at
the national championship when they kicked a late field goal to win 24-23.
Penn
State is banged up on the
defensive side of the ball, but the Hawkeyes are not very good offensively. The
Lions get the victory 27-17.
Alternative Game: Illinois vs Ohio St, actually Wisky vs Mi St and
Minn vs NW are
good alternatives too. Bowl slots will be determined this weekend. OSU wins a
close game, 24-17.
Big 12
Houston vs Texas
Tech. The Cougars get their second shot in three weeks to knock off a Big 12
South team. Houston is ranked for the first time in about
20 years. The Red Raiders are coming off a tough loss against Texas. The game will be
close, but Texas Tech opens it up late in the third quarter. Red Raiders win
48-37.
Alternative Game: Missouri vs Nevada. Not a close game, but the Big 12 has
very few good games this weekend.
PAC 10
Cal vs. Oregon. Oregon’s offense is not
good. Cal has
looked great. Jahvid Best is a legitimate Heisman candidate. He’ll run for 180
yards and three TD’s. Oregon HC Chip Kelly’s first season is going to be
bumpy. Cal
wins 35-21.
Alternative Game: Washington vs. Stanford. Both teams are 2-1
and inching their way back to being competitive programs. This should be a good
game. I like Stanford in a tight game 20-17.
SEC
Alabama vs. Arkansas. Bama’s at
home, their defense is awesome, the offense is playing better than expected and
Arkansas has
no defense. The Tide rolls….maybe. Petrino will figure out a way to keep the
game close for a while, but in the end, Bama prevails 35-24.
Alternative Game: Georgia vs Arizona State. Sun Devils are undefeated, but
have played weak competition. Georgia looks to be back on track
after consecutive wins. More importantly, the Dawgs offense is improving.
Georgia wins big 38-17.
Week Four has a little less spice compared to the first
three weeks of the season. I have a feeling there will be a few gems in there
were not expecting.
Possible upsets:
TCU over Clemson
Maryland over Rutgers
Maine over Syracuse
BG over Boise
